My mate’s one developed some weird misfire/stumbling/rough running thing while on the way to work. Relatively recent rebuild, just been swapped for uprated ignition bits (swapped back to old ones, no change).
Roughly compression tested and the front rotor is reading 8, the rear 6 (both of which are apparently good enough numbers for a renesis in isolation, but it’s the disparity that seems odd).
It’s still under warranty from the rebuild so it’s going back early Jan, but just trying to eliminate things that might not be the internals (which is what’s covered by the warranty)...

here’s all you need to know ;)

My guess would be a defective ICM (Ignition Control Module). These things go fast in rotaries... Do you get heavy misfires when revving high?

I think I found the problem: the pistons are all gone and there’s a set of naff triangular dinner plates in the crankcase.

Who the hell would put those in there?!

Never that sound before from a rotary. Did it get the warranty replacement from Mazda? Mine did and it’s worked fine ever since. Wish I could help. Good luck.

Yeah it’s an odd one. Was bought from an independent rotary specialist (good reputation, so we’re relatively confident they’ll sort it out).
Fingers crossed it’s something relatively minor :)
How long have you been driving yours?

Would explain the noise it’s making!

Hmmm, I don’t think he’s tried revving it high up yet. It would be a good bet as the ignition was the last thing he’d changed before it went pop.
Shall do some more diagnosis tonight...

Haha! That’s brilliant :)

Since I bought it new in 2004. Also, put your problem on the RX-8 club forum. It’s huge, and there is very little someone there hasn’t seen.
